This is the motivation and message behind the Marmalade brand.
I actually gleaned this wisdom from examining the way my Dad lived. After he passed away the constant theme of all the stories and memories shared about him was that he lived his life without ever apologizing for who he was.
He did not let what others might think about him prevent him from doing things that made him happy, which most of the time involved doing things for others and loving them the best way he knew how, working hard and making new friends everywhere he went (and wearing his jogging pants pulled up a little too high, LOL). By forging ahead and being aligned to who he was, he really lived a rich life.
Nearly four hundred people attended my Dad’s celebration of life. This would have blown him away. It blew my family away. And, it affirmed this thought that has become deeply rooted in my soul:
Live out of your entire being, without apology. Do not let what others might think about you prevent you from pursuing what makes you happy.
I know I am not alone when I say, I have spent too much of my life allowing my decisions to be made based on fear of judgement from others rather than based on what aligns with me and my happiness. And, I have spent far too much time apologizing for the times when I was being authentically me.
Marmalade is here to help us both - you and me, on our journeys toward living unapologetically.
I know you’re probably wondering, how is a floral clutch or vintage camera cell phone case going to help me to live authentically and without apology?
Well, simply put, fashion accessories is just one small way we can tell others something about ourselves. It’s one way that we can proudly wear our character and personality for everyone to see!
Or, as Doug says in The Devil Wears Prada, “An accessory is merely a piece of iconography used to express individual identity.”
For me personally, Marmalade has also allowed me to dig deeper into my creativity and love of colourful, fun patterns, and to blend together my love for elegant and casual (functional) design. I’ve suppressed this part of myself for far too long and while I still favour my black on black look for fall and winter, I also love that I now have at my fingertips a variety of charming colourful and functional accessories to add some personality to my look when I step out the door.
Aligning ourselves with something as simple as our taste in fashion is one step towards living, unapologetically.

I hope you’re having a great week!
